FDA Approved
Ortho-K is a very safe and reversible procedure that was approved by the FDA in 2002. However, with any contact lens wear there is a slight risk of an infection. This risk can be greatly minimized by adopting a careful cleaning and disinfecting regime and seeing your eye doctor for your scheduled visits.
Controlling Nearsightedness
Research has demonstrated that the technology used in Ortho-K has often slowed down and/or stopped children's eyesight from becoming more nearsighted. Most recently an article published in the Journal of Ophthalmology in 2015 concluded: "With careful education and observation, Ortho-K lenses use is effective and acceptable for slowing myopic progression in children. Moreover, as the efficacy on myopic control by Ortho-K lenses reduce with increasing age, early intervention with Ortho-K in young children may be worth considering to reduce the prevalence of high myopia."
Freedom
Ortho-K lenses are only worn while sleeping. They are removed upon awakening and provide clear vision without use of glasses or contact lenses. It is a great alternative to those who don't want to risk or who are not ready for surgery.
